Will Congress lose the post of Leader of Opposition in Gujarat, know what the rule says

Congress LOP In Gujarat: The BJP has won the Gujarat assembly elections with a thumping majority. In the results declared on Thursday, the BJP won 156 seats with a vote share of 52.5 per cent. On the other hand, the Congress was reduced to just 17 seats in this election. In such a situation, the biggest question now is whether the Congress will lose the post of Leader of the Opposition in Gujarat if it gets less than 10 percent of the total seats? Let us tell you what the rules say in such a situation.

In fact, the Congress has won only 17 seats in Gujarat, while according to the rule, the party should have 10 percent seats to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. In the context of Gujarat, at least 19 seats are required, but the Congress is two seats short. In such a situation, it is possible that the Congress will lose the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

This is not the first time this happened with Congress.

Let us tell you that the Congress could not send an opposition leader in the two national elections in 2014 and the second in 2019, because it won only 44 seats in 2014 and 52 in 2017. The Congress had tried to make Mallikarjun Kharge the Leader of the Opposition, but the then Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan put a stop to it citing rules. A party needs 55 seats to become the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

It is notable that the Leader of the Opposition in the House is given the status and facilities equal to that of the cabinet minister. Along with this, the frontmost seat in the queue of the opposition is also allotted to sit in the assembly. The main role of the Leader of the Opposition is to question the current government and hold them accountable to the public. It also helps in correcting the mistakes of the ruling party.
