Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has shared the amazing growth of the mobile industry on X. He wrote in an ex-post that today 99.2 percent of mobile phones being manufactured in India are ‘Made in India’ which shows a growth of 20% as compared to 2014. Ashwini Vaishnav wrote that she met industry experts to assess the growth of the mobile industry. The mobile phone industry has performed brilliantly in the last 9 years and while in 2014, India was importing 78% of the mobile phones, today i.e. in 2023, India is manufacturing 99.2% of the smartphones in the country itself.

The growth of the mobile industry has not only strengthened the domestic manufacturing ecosystem but also significantly contributed to reducing India’s dependence on foreign imports. It is noteworthy that earlier Google had announced that it would start manufacturing its phones in India. Google follows an impressive list of global smartphone brands from Samsung to Apple to start assembling their flagship phones in the country. This time Apple’s latest models iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are being assembled in India. Till now lakhs of Made in India iPhones have been sold.

In this meeting with industry experts, the Union Minister discussed the upcoming challenges and how growth can be further increased. Ashwini Vaishnav also praised the mobile industry’s commitment towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative and talked about making India the top mobile manufacturer in the future.
