The country’s top court currently has only three women judges: Justice Hima Kohli, Justice BV Nagaratna and Justice Bela Trivedi. While Justice Kohli’s tenure is till September 2024, Justice Trivedi will hold office till June 2025.

Supreme Court I am going to repeat history once again and perhaps for the third time in the history of the country’s biggest court, on Thursday, a bench will sit in which all the judges will be women, that is, a completely women’s bench. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud yesterday on wednesday Justice Hima Kohli And Justice Bela M Trivedi Bench has been constituted. Currently, one of the 3 judges in the court is a woman judge (Justice BV Nagaratna) who will become the country’s first woman Chief Justice in 2027.
For the first time, a women’s bench was formed in the Supreme Court in 2013, when Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai sat together. After this, the second time in the history of the court came in 2018, when Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indira Banerjee shared a bench on 5 September.
32 cases listed near the women’s bench
According to the website Indian Express, the bench of Justice Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi has 32 matters listed, including 10 transfer petitions related to matrimonial disputes and 10 bail matters.

27 out of 34 judges in SC
At present, the Supreme Court has a working strength of 27 judges as against the sanctioned strength of 34. That means 7 posts are vacant. Next month, the vacancy will increase to eight as Justice S Abdul Nazeer is due to retire on January 4 next year. Seven more justices will also retire next year, while Justice Nazeer will complete his term.
For the first time in 1989, a woman justice was appointed in the apex court. When Justice M. Fathima Beevi was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court after retiring as a judge of the Kerala High Court. After him, Justice Sujata Manohar, Justice Ruma Pal, Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, Justice R Bhanumati, Justice Indu Malhotra, Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Kohli, Justice Nagaratna and Justice Trivedi were made judges in the Supreme Court. The last three justices were sworn in on a single day (September 2, 2021) during the tenure of the then Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana, taking the number of women judges including Justice Banerjee to a historic four.
Justice Indira Banerjee retired on 23 September this year. Justice Kohli was the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court before her elevation to the apex court. Justice Trivedi was a judge of the Gujarat High Court before joining the Supreme Court.
