Suryakumar Yadav, World Cup 2023 Final: If Suryakumar Yadav had played a big innings in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 against Australia, the result could have been different. Crores of Indian fans were expecting from Surya, who came at number seven in the title match, that he would play amazing innings and take India closer to the total of 300, but unfortunately it did not happen and Team India scored 240 runs on the last ball of the innings. But lost the last wicket. But after the World Cup, Surya’s bat spoke loudly in the T20 series. So is Surya effective only for T20? If yes, then why is he being given a chance in ODI?
Surya’s bat appeared almost silent in an important tournament like the World Cup. But after that, in the T20 series against Australia and South Africa, he showed the same explosive game for which he is known. But flopping on important occasions and aggressive batting in the T20 series is making Suryakumar Yadav a failure even after success. After the World Cup, Surya played the next match in the T20 series against Australia, in which he scored 80 runs. That means Surya’s form returned in the very next match of the World Cup.
Due to low score, Team India had to face defeat in the 2023 World Cup final. In the final, Surya scored only 18 runs in 28 balls with the help of only one four. This was not the first time that Surya, who is called Mr. 360, flopped in ODI, but till now he has almost flopped in ODI.
Not able to bring approach like Glenn Maxwell in batting
T20’s number one batsman Suryakumar is failing to bring the same approach as Australian star batsman Glenn Maxwell in his batting. Glenn Maxwell, who bats with a tremendous strike rate, does wonders for his team by doing wonders in T20 as well as ODI cricket. But this is not the case with Surya, he bats with a tremendous strike rate only in T20 and when it comes to one-day matches, he flops.
In his career so far, Maxwell has scored runs at a strike rate of 153.09 in T20 International and 126.91 in ODI. Apart from this, Maxwell played the best innings of his ODI career against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, where while batting at number 6, he scored 201* runs and led Australia to a historic victory.
But if we talk about Surya, till now he has scored 2041 runs in T20 International at an average of 44.36 and strike rate of 171.22. But in ODIs, he has been able to score runs only at an average of 25.76 and strike rate of 105.02, which clearly shows how weak Surya is in ODIs.
Although despite poor figures in ODIs, the Indian team expressed confidence in Surya for a big tournament like the ODI World Cup, but he could not live up to the mark. Surya played a total of 7 matches in the ODI World Cup 2023, in which he scored 106 runs at an average of just 17.7. Whereas Glenn Maxwell had scored 400 runs in 9 innings of the tournament at an average of 66.7 and a lightning strike rate of 150.4.
There is a world of difference between Surya’s T20 and ODI figures.
It is noteworthy that Suryakumar Yadav has played 59 T20 and 37 ODI matches so far, in whose figures the difference is clearly visible. In T20, Surya has scored 2041 runs at an average of 44.36 and strike rate of 171.22, which includes 3 centuries and 17 half-centuries. Looking at his ODI figures, it seems as if these are some other figures. In 35 innings of ODI, he has scored 773 runs at an average of 25.76, which includes only 4 half-centuries. His high score in ODI has been 72*.
