Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood and Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurasingha have expressed displeasure over having a reserve day for the Super-4 round match between India and Pakistan. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had announced on Friday that if rain interrupted the match between India and Pakistan on 10 September, the match would be played again on 11 September.
However, no reserve day has been kept for other matches of the tournament. All the matches of the Super-4 stage are to be held in Colombo and there is a forecast of rain for the next few days.
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurasingha said that he is not aware of the reason for the sudden change in the ‘playing conditions’ (rules set for matches) of the Asia Cup. “There is a technical committee in the Asia Cup, which is represented by the six teams participating in the tournament. They might have taken this decision for some other reason,” he said on the eve of the Super-4 stage match against Sri Lanka.
Hathurasingha indicated that no unanimous decision was taken on this issue and his team would also like to have a reserve day for the matches. “It is not ideal and we would also like an extra day,” he said.
Hathurasingha also indicated that the officials concerned did not consult other teams before arriving at the decision. He said, “I have no further comment on this as they have already taken the decision. If they had consulted us first, we would have given our opinion.”
At the same time, Sri Lankan coach Chris Silverwood said that he was surprised when he was told about the decision to keep an extra day for the Indo-Pak match. He said, “Obviously when I first heard it I was a bit surprised. But we don’t organize the tournament, so there’s not much we can do about it.”
The Sri Lankan coach said that India or Pakistan could get an unfair advantage from the reserve day. He said, “To be honest, I only see it as a problem as long as it gets other teams points and it affects our campaign.”
