The Indian captain did not take the name of Virat Kohli or Shubman Gill, but of left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan. He described Dhawan as his favorite batting partner. The captain of Men in Blue said that he has a very good relationship with Dhawan on and off the field.
Rohit Sharma while talking to news agency ‘IANS’ said, “Shikhar and I have a very strong friendship inside and outside the field. We have played together for many years, and it is a partnership that I have enjoyed being a part of. “He has infectious energy and is great fun to be around, and the record we have set for India as an opening pair.”
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have played together 117 times in ODI, in which they have scored 5193 runs. Whereas Kohli and Rohit Sharma have batted together 86 times in ODI, during which both have scored 5008 runs. For some time now, Rohit Sharma has been handling the responsibility of opening batsman along with the team’s young opener Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan made their place as a pair for the first time through Champions Trophy 2013. After this both of them played together for a long time. As an opening pair, both of them performed many feats for India in ODIs. However, at present Dhawan is out of the plans of the Indian team. Rohit Sharma is commanding the team. Dhawan played the last ODI for India in December 2022, when Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were seen playing as a pair for the last time.
Dhawan is also not a part of the Indian team in the ODI World Cup to be played on home soil this year. Whereas in the previous 2019 edition, Dhawan was included in Team India in the World Cup. This time Shubhman Gill has been selected as opener.
