Nazmul Hasan BCB President: Nazmul Hasan has announced to resign from the post of President of Bangladesh Cricket Board. He has taken this decision after getting the post of Sports Minister in the Government of Bangladesh. He was holding this post for 12 years.
Nazmul Hasan was also a candidate in the general elections held in Bangladesh earlier this year. He was declared the winner on 7 January. He has been an MP before also. This time, when he was again elected as MP, he was given the post of Minister in the Youth and Sports Department. He took charge of this department on January 11 itself. Since then, speculations were being made that Nazmul may now leave the post of Cricket Board Chairman. Now he himself has exposed these speculations.
‘I want to pay equal attention to all sports’
Talking to reporters, Nazmul said, ‘I could have held both the posts simultaneously. There is no law that these two things cannot be handled together. There is no connection between Bangladesh Cricket Board President leaving the post due to getting the Sports Ministry. There have been many ministers in the past too, who have performed both these responsibilities simultaneously. This has been happening in foreign countries also. But it is better that I do not do this because if I hold both these posts, I will be accused of giving more priority to cricket. As a sports minister, I want to give equal priority to all sports.
Will have to negotiate with ICC
According to ICC rules, if a governing body is elected in a cricket board, it has to complete its tenure. Accordingly, it will be mandatory for Nazmul to remain in the post till October 2025. Along with this, it should also be made clear that there should be no interference of the government in the activities of the board. In such a situation, the Bangladesh Cricket Board will also discuss with the ICC to find a solution on the issue of leaving the post early and electing a new president.
