Mohammed Siraj could have taken more wickets against Sri Lanka in the final, read why the captain stopped
Mohammed Siraj, Asia Cup Final 2023: The final match of Asia Cup 2023 was played between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, in which India won by 10 wickets and won the title. Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj played an important role in helping India win the title match. Siraj took 6 wickets, but Siraj could have taken 7 wickets also. At the last moment captain Rohit Sharma had to stop him.
While talking to the media after the final, the Indian captain said that he got a message from the trainer that he should stop Siraj. If Siraj had taken the 7th wicket, he would have become the bowler taking the most wickets in an ODI innings for India, breaking Stuart Binny’s record. But the trainer stopped Siraj through captain Rohit Sharma.
Rohit Sharma told, “He bowled 7 overs and I wanted him to be given more overs, but I got a message from the trainers that he should be stopped. He himself was excited about bowling. He wanted to throw the ball. It is the nature of any bowler or batsman that whenever he gets an opportunity, he wants to take advantage of it. But this is where my role comes in, I have to keep everything under control so that there is no more pressure on the player than necessary.”
Rohit Sharma also remembered the incident when Siraj had taken 4 wickets in the ODI played against Sri Lanka in Trivandrum but could not complete the five wicket haul. The Indian captain said, “I remember when we were playing against Sri Lanka in Trivandrum, there was a similar situation at that time also. He bowled 8-9 overs and took four wickets. But I think 7 overs is fine.”
