Ross Taylor: Indian coach admired Ross Taylor, said – there will be 4000 tigers in the world, but Rahul Dravid is the only

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a tournament where foreign players get to mingle with Indian players. A major reason for the success of this league has also been that players from all over the world play as a team in it.

The 2011 IPL was the time when former New Zealand player Ross Taylor got a chance to share the dressing room with Rahul Dravid and Shane Warne. That particular edition of the tournament made Taylor understand the penetration of Indian cricketers in their country. How difficult is it for them to roam freely.

In his autobiography ‘Black and White’, Taylor narrates an incident where he along with Dravid went to Ranthambore National Park to see tigers. It was then that he realized how the general public was showing more interest in Dravid than in seeing a rare tiger. Taylor says- I asked Dravid how many times have you seen a tiger? He said that I have never seen a tiger. I have gone on jungle safari 21 times and have not seen a single tiger. I thought what? 21 safaris even if you don’t see tigers? To be honest, if I had known this, I would not have gone with him. I say to Dravid – no thank you! I’ll watch the Discovery Channel.

Taylor says – Jacob Oram went out in the morning. He had no pleasure in coming on safari. There was a baseball match on TV that he wanted to watch. That’s why he didn’t come with us on the afternoon safari. Our driver got a radio call from a colleague to say that he had found a famous Tiger T-17. Dravid was thrilled to hear this. After going on 21 safaris without seeing the tiger, it was finally about to be seen.

Taylor explains – We were in an open SUV, which is slightly bigger than Land Rovers. The tiger was on a rock, 100 meters away from us. We were shocked to see a tiger in the forest, but instead of seeing a tiger in other vehicles, people were sitting with their cameras fixed on Rahul. They were excited to see Dravid instead of the tiger. They were all as excited as we were on seeing the tiger. There are probably around 4000 tigers in the world, but Rahul Dravid is only one.
