Why is there opposition to the Uniform Civil Code? know the reason
UCC: Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Tuesday (June 27). PM Narendra Modi said that two laws cannot run in one house. How will the country be able to run with such a dual system. He said that Muslims are being misled on this issue. On this statement of PM Modi, there has been a political uproar.
As soon as this statement came to the fore, all the opposition parties including the Congress called it a statement given in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. From AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi to many Islamic organizations have raised objections on UCC. Amidst all this, the important question is that what is the reason behind the opposition to the Uniform Civil Code?
Why is there opposition to UCC?
The Muslim community sees the UCC as an interference in religious matters. Actually, under the Muslim Personal Law Board, laws are decided for Muslims on the basis of Shariat. Expressing their unhappiness over the enactment of the triple talaq law, the Ulama of the Barelvi community had said that worldly interference in religious matters is not good. Worldly law keeps on improving but change is not possible in Shari’a.
Muslim religious leaders who oppose the UCC believe that the existence of the Muslim Personal Law Board will be in danger because of the UCC. Which will directly violate the rights of Muslims. Muslim religious leaders say that women have got protection in Shariat. There is no need to make any separate law for this.
Muslim religious leaders suspect an attempt to impose Hindu customs on Muslims through the Uniform Civil Code. They believe that after the implementation of UCC, an attempt will be made to impose Hindu rituals on every religion.
UCC is not out of BJP’s election agenda
Like Ram Mandir and Article 370, Uniform Civil Code has always been included in BJP’s election agenda. During the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP openly mentioned this in its manifesto. Ever since coming to power in 2014, BJP leaders have given frequent statements regarding the UCC.
When did BJP move towards UCC?
The biggest step regarding the Uniform Civil Code was taken on 9 December 2022. The ‘Uniform Civil Code in India 2020’ bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha as a private member’s bill. BJP MP Kirori Lal Meena placed this bill on the table of the House. Many Congress and Trinamool Congress MPs did not vote in the voting regarding this.
Parties like Congress and TMC did not take part in the voting despite opposing the UCC. Because of this, 63 votes were cast in favor of the UCC private member bill and 23 votes were cast against it. With which this proposal was passed. Since then, efforts to implement UCC intensified in many BJP-ruled states. However, minority communities are opposing it.
