G20 Summit India: Hours after the African Union (AU) joined the G20 on Saturday (September 9), a senior representative of South Africa said that after AU becoming part of the grouping, the voice of the continent and the ‘Global South’ will be strengthened at the global level. Will be strong.
The representative, who was in Delhi for the G20 summit, said that South Africa had always hoped that AU would join the grouping. “We are very pleased, especially given that South Africa has always supported the inclusion of the AU in the G20,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. This will give a voice to our continent, but also to the ‘Global South’ on a big world stage.
The term ‘Global South’ is used for the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Regarding India’s presidency of G20, this representative said that it was a pleasant experience to see that AU got permanent membership of G20 in this summit held in New Delhi.
PM Modi announces inclusion of African Union in G-20
The African Union on Saturday became a permanent member of the G20, a group of countries with the world’s largest economies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day G20 summit, announced the inclusion of the 55-nation African Union as a new member.
The South African representative said that his country hoped that the AU would be included in the G20 during the summit. He said, “This is definitely a very good thing and also a good thing in terms of the development of our countries.” The representative said that this step will bring the African Union countries closer to other G20 member countries.
