Who is Rakesh Balwal: Violence continues in Manipur. Meanwhile, Srinagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Balwal has been sent back to Manipur cadre. Balwal is considered an expert in handling terrorist related matters. Balwal was sent to Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre in December 2021.
Now he will be given a new posting in Manipur, where violent clashes have been taking place between the Meitei and tribal Kuki communities since May this year and the situation in the state is worsening. Recently, the tension increased further after the picture of dead bodies of two students went viral on social media. Demonstrations are taking place at various places.
Rakesh Balwal is a resident of Udhampur.
An official order said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the Home Ministry’s proposal to send back IPS Rakesh Balwal from AGMUT cadre to Manipur cadre. Balwal is a resident of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. He has served in various positions in Manipur Police and was last Senior Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur in 2017. He has also worked in areas like Thobal and Imphal.
Took over the post of SSP of Srinagar
It is noteworthy that Rakesh had taken over as SSP of Srinagar at a time when the city was witnessing several terrorist activities including killing of minorities and attacks on policemen. After assuming charge, Balwal focused on improving law and order within the city. Focused and ensured that there were no terrorists from here and no attacks on minorities or security forces.
Independence Day celebrated during Rakesh’s tenure
It was during his tenure that after three decades, permission was given to take out Muharram procession on the streets of Srinagar and this year a large number of people participated in the Independence Day celebrations. It was during his tenure that many international events like hosting the Tourism Working Group of G20 were organized peacefully.
Has been honored with many medals
Balwal has also been honored with many medals. It was during his tenure that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was recently released from house arrest after four years and was allowed to offer Friday prayers in the historic Jama Masjid.
Also served as Superintendent of Police in NIA
Before taking over as Srinagar SSP, Balwal was the Superintendent of Police in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on deputation basis for three and a half years. He was also part of the team investigating the 2019 Pulwama terrorist attack.
