Mumbai Local Trains: On Saturday (February 10), 147 trains were canceled due to shortage of motormen on the Central and Harbor lines between Byculla and Sandhurst Road stations. All these motormen had gone to attend the funeral of their colleague Muralidhar Sharma. Muralidhar Sharma died in an accident between Sandhurst Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) station on Friday.
According to PTI agency, the railway official said that about 147 trains including 88 local train services were cancelled. The incident is raising questions whether this was a planned protest as motormen have earlier raised the issue of excessive work pressure. Due to delay in rail services on Saturday (February 11) evening, a large number of passengers remained stranded at CSMT and other stations.
What is the reason behind cancellation of trains?
The railway official said the services were delayed as many motormen had gone to Kalyan to attend the funeral of their colleague Murlidhar Sharma. Sharma died while crossing the tracks between Byculla and Sandhurst Road stations on Friday. He told that Sharma’s last rites were to take place in the afternoon but it could take place at five in the evening. A large number of motormen attended the funeral, due to which train operations were delayed.
According to the Indian Express report, Muralidhar Sharma was being investigated because he jumped the red signal while on duty. CRMS General Secretary Praveen Vajpayee spoke about the dangerous impact of accidents involving signal passing at danger. He says that employees go into depression due to the fear of being fired from the job. The SPD investigation should be done from a humanitarian perspective as this is just a mistake and not a deliberate crime.
