<पी शैली="पाठ-संरेखण: औचित्य सिद्ध करें;">I am the constitution,… those 2 years 11 months 18 days…these were the days when I was to be handed over – the future of India, the 389 people who shaped me, made the dream of freedom come true, I remember each and every face Who made me, who wrote me and with the contribution of these I became complete…. because they were the makers of the constitution.

Every member of the Constituent Assembly contributed at his own level to ensure that India’s integrity and unity in diversity remain a form. Sometimes protest is more important than acceptance, especially when it comes to the national highway. Today, when the market of discussions regarding the name of the country is hot, then I am remembering my member HV Kamat who had presented the amendment proposal regarding the official name of the country in the Constituent Assembly.

74 years ago, on September 18, 1949, for the first time in the Constituent Assembly, the discussion on the naming of the country started, in fact, the Ambedkar Committee suggested two names, India and Bharat, against which Hari Vishnu Kamat, a member of the Constituent Assembly, presented an amendment proposal and the country Demanded to change the name of India from India to Bharat or Bharatvarsha. HV Kamat while giving his opinion on whether the name of the country should be Bharat or India, said – there is a practice of naming the newborn in the world. India is also going to be born soon in the form of a republic. Citizens demand that the country should also be named, for which many suggestions have come, such as Pramukh Hindustan, Hind, Bharatvarsh, Bharat and Bharatbhoomi.

HV Kamat debated on the naming of the country

HV Kamat also answered the questions of those who were asking what is the need of this name? This country is called India, but those who want to name Bharat or Bharatvarsha or Bharat Bhoomi argue that it is the oldest name of the earth. Disagreeing on Kamat’s point, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar said whether it is necessary to find out all this. I do not understand the rationale of this proposal.

…When Kamat advised Dr. Ambedkar

The question was not only of the name, but of the nationalism and affinity hidden in the name, regarding which Kamat also referred to Ireland in his speech. He said that it is not right to say India that is Bharat. Dr. Ambedkar has accepted many mistakes earlier also in drafting the constitution. This too should be considered a mistake. Adding India to the name of the country is a big mistake. This needs to be rectified by India. Ireland had said in 1937 that the real name of their country would be Ayr and Ireland in English. India should also be named on the same lines. Can put India in English. After Kamat’s argument, the debate became fast and heated although Ambedkar wanted the matter to be settled in half an hour.

However, there was a long debate on this, in which Seth Govind Das also supported Kamat’s proposal by referring to the historical context of India. Seth Govind Das said that the mention of India is not found in any of our books, the use of the name India started after the Greeks came to India. It is obvious that he called the Indus river as Indus and India came to be known as Indus. Which is mentioned in the Britannica dictionary. But India is mentioned in Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharata and Vishnu Purana, Bharat is also written in Brahma Purana. During this debate, Kamlapati Tripathi tried to suggest a middle way and said that the country has been named India, but considering the historical context of this country, it should be renamed as India.

The motion was defeated by 51 votes to 38 on the vote after the southern and non-Hindi speaking members disagreed on the name India. And in Article 1 the name of the country was passed as India i.e. Union of the States of India.

Due to the disagreement between the members of the Constituent Assembly on 14 September 1949, the official name of the country could not be Bharat i.e. India, but the developing India in the 21st century is moving forward towards getting its historical identity and hence the name Bharat before India. The voice is getting louder.
