Manipur violence update: Violence continues in the northeastern state of Manipur. There has been firing in the state on Thursday (June 29) morning as well. The army said that at 5.30 am, some unidentified gunmen opened fire without any provocation in Harothel village of Manipur. To prevent the situation from escalating, the security forces deployed in the area retaliated and the firing has now stopped.

The army said that the rioters were given by the soldiers of Assam Rifles. The inspection of the matter is going on. As a result of the prompt action of the soldiers, the firing stopped. Unconfirmed reports indicate some casualties. There is also information about a large crowd gathering in the area. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also reached Manipur on Thursday.

Rahul Gandhi’s convoy was stopped by the Manipur Police at Bishnupur, 20 km from Imphal. Rahul Gandhi had left for Churachandpur district after reaching Imphal for his two-day tour of Manipur, where he was to meet people displaced by the violence in relief camps. Rahul Gandhi returned to Imphal after being stopped by the police. Party workers and local people also protested against the stopping of Rahul Gandhi’s convoy.

Manipur Congress President K. Meghchandra Singh said that people are standing on the streets to welcome Rahul Gandhi, but Bishnupur police officers are stopping them on the streets. I have heard that the Chief Minister of Manipur has also given instructions to block the roads. They are politicizing it. They are only saying that the law and order situation is not good and are not allowing us to move forward.

It is worth mentioning that so far more than 100 people have died in the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3 between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. The violence began after a tribal solidarity march was organized on 3 May to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur.
