BK Hariprasad Show Cause Notice: The Congress Disciplinary Committee (DAC) on Tuesday (September 12) said it has decided to issue a ‘show cause’ notice to senior leader BK Hariprasad after receiving a complaint for alleged violation of party discipline. Karnataka Legislative Council member Hariprasad will be asked to explain his conduct in detail within 10 days.

Committee member Tariq Anwar said in a release, “Congress President (Mallikarjun Kharge) had received a complaint about breach of party discipline from BK Hariprasad, a member of the Legislative Council and a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee. He is accused of publicly criticizing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and sharing the stage with BJP and YSR Congress Party leaders at the Backward Classes Conference in Bengaluru on September 9, 2023.

Congress general secretary Anwar said the matter was referred to the DAC, which has decided to issue a show cause notice to Hariprasad asking him to explain his conduct within 10 days.

What did BK Hariprasad say?

Hariprasad had said on September 9 that some people who wear Hublot watches with dhoti cannot claim to be socialists and no one can become like him by sitting in the car of Devraj Urs (former Chief Minister known for social reforms).

His comment is being considered as an indirect attack on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Although Harihaprasad did not take anyone’s name during his speech, it was clear from the references given by him that his target was Siddaramaiah.

During his tenure as Chief Minister in 2016, Siddaramaiah was embroiled in a controversy regarding a diamond studded Hublot watch. On this he clarified that the watch was given to him as a gift by Dr. Girish Chandra Verma, a cardiologist living in Dubai. Siddaramaiah had reportedly handed over the watch, worth Rs 70 lakh, to the then Assembly Speaker and asked him to make it state property.

Have commented on Siddaramaiah earlier also

This is not the first time that Hariprasad has targeted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Earlier in July too, he had made comments regarding the posts of minister and chief minister, which had made the party as well as Siddaramaiah uncomfortable.

Hariprasad and Siddaramaiah come from Other Backward Classes. Both belong to Ediga and Kuruba communities respectively. Hariprasad had also expressed his displeasure over the Congress not considering a Dalit leader like G Parameshwar (Home Minister in the present government) for the post of Chief Minister and a leader like Satish Jarkiholi, who comes from a Scheduled Tribe, for the post of Deputy Chief Minister. . Hariprasad is believed to be angry for some time over not being included in the state cabinet.
