What is cervical cancer?
According to experts, cervical cancer occurs when cells in the cervix, a part of a woman’s uterus, start growing uncontrollably. The cause of this cancer is HPV (Human Papillomavirus) virus. It spreads through vaginal, anal and oral sex. Women who have more unprotected sex or have relations with more than one person are at greater risk of contracting this virus. Women whose immunity is weak are at greater risk of cancer. It is not necessary that a woman who has HPV virus will get cervical cancer. However, it is possible to prevent this cancer by getting HPV vaccine at the right time.
When should the cervical cancer vaccine be administered?
According to gynecologists, if you want to avoid cervical cancer, then the maximum benefit of getting the vaccine is from 9 to 14 years. However, this vaccine can be administered till the age of 26 years. This means that cervical cancer vaccine should be administered before becoming sexually active. Now the question is whether the vaccine should not be administered after 26 years. Regarding this, experts say that vaccination can be done even after this age. Even then it can protect against many strains of HPV virus. But if you want to get the maximum benefit from this vaccine, then it should be taken only from 9 to 14 years.
