Kerala Double Murder: The accused of double murder in Kerala has been caught by the police after 11 years. The police arrested a 35-year-old accused man on Tuesday (29 November) for the murder of his live-in partner and daughter. Regarding this case, the Thiruvananthapuram police officer told on Wednesday (November 30) that this murder case is of the year 2011. The accused person has been identified as Mahin Kannu.

Police said that 23-year-old woman Vidya and Mahin Kannu were living in live-in. Both had a two and a half year old daughter. Vidya came to know a few months before her death that the accused Mahin Kannu was already married. He insisted that he divorce his wife and marry her. Kannu was not ready for this. Police said that his wife Rukia had helped him kill Vidya and their daughter. Rukiya has also been arrested.

Took away Tamil Nadu on the promise of marriage

According to the police, Vidya and her daughter Gauri went missing on August 17, 2011. Accused Kannu had taken both of them with him saying that we were going to Vellankani, Tamil Nadu and would get married there. Instead, he took them to a deserted beach in Colachel area of ‚Äč‚ÄčTamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district. Where he killed them by drowning and drowned their dead bodies in the sea.

The woman’s mother filed a complaint

Vidya’s mother Radha lodged a missing complaint about Vidya and her daughter. At that time Mahin had told him that Vidya had shifted to a village in Tamil Nadu. Radha said that upset over the daughter’s disappearance, her husband had committed suicide two years ago. The case was re-opened two years back and handed over to the Special Investigation Team of the Crime Branch headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police KJ Johnson.

In their initial probe, the investigators found that there were some lacunae in the official statement recorded in the case file. Furthermore, it was also learned that the preliminary investigation team of the Maranellur police station had allegedly driven away Vidya’s family by telling them that they would have to send a team to Tamil Nadu to search for Vidya, for which they would have to pay. The investigation into the case gathered momentum two months ago after an episode of a show aired on a Malayalam news channel featured the case. In which unresolved cases are shown.

According to the SIT, Vidya had fallen in love with Mahin Kannu in 2008. After the two had a daughter, Kannu went to the Gulf country and severed all ties with Vidya, but when he returned two years later, Vidya found him and convinced him to live with her again. Both were living together since 6 months before the murder and Vidya was insisting on marrying him.

The bodies were found two days after the murder

Police said Kannu’s wife Rukiya had chosen the secluded spot in Colachel where Vidya and their daughter were murdered on August 18. It was learned that their bodies were found on the beach two days later, but local police officials in Tamil Nadu were not able to identify the bodies. Vidya’s mother Radha has now identified both the dead bodies and their clothes from photographs. Vidya’s mother lived for a decade in the hope that her daughter and granddaughter were alive. Vidya’s mother said that Kannu gave us wrong information that both are safe and alive. We never thought that he would end them like this. He should get severe punishment.

Revealed after 11 years

The SIT said that Kannu had also misled the investigation team, but he broke down on being questioned about the evidence and phone call records and finally disclosed the whole matter after 11 years. He said that Kannu had initially told him that he had dropped both of them near their house after taking them to the hospital. The police officer said that on the night of August 17, 2011, the location of Kannu’s phone was in Tamil Nadu. Kannu first claimed that Vidya had jumped into the sea in a fit of rage over the child, but later the accused allegedly confessed that he had killed them both.
