Effect of cyclone ‘Mandus’ seen in Tamil Nadu, heavy rains in Chennai amid threat of storm, school-college closed

A Twitter update by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Mandus is located 270 km east-southeast of Karaikal. An IMD official said that it is expected to cross the coast near Malappuram. It is centered about 270 km away from Chennai.

Locks on educational institutions in Tamil Nadu

The IMD official said that it will weaken into a cyclonic storm in the next few hours. In view of IMD’s warning of heavy rains and strong winds, educational institutions have been kept closed in many districts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile in neighboring Puducherry, the regional administration declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal regions on Friday and Saturday after the IMD issued a cyclone warning. The low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal had turned into a deep depression on December 6. On Wednesday it was located about 750 km from Chennai.

Cyclone will pass between Puducherry and Sriharikota

According to the bulletin issued by IMD, cyclonic storm Mandus is present in the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, about 500 km to the southeast of Karaikal. According to the bulletin, it is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Andhra Pradesh south coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota around midnight of December 9 with winds reaching 70 kmph. Chances are. Puducherry is about 160 kilometers away from Chennai. The Tamil Nadu government has taken all precautionary measures in view of the forecast of heavy rains.
