Tesla is going to enter India soon and preparations have already started. Tesla has accepted the rules of the Government of India and is currently looking for a place to set up the plant.
Indian government officials said that the government is not going to make any separate policy to give any special exemption for Tesla and the company can apply to take benefits under PLI for existing schemes like auto and advanced chemistry cell.

The government has already taken out a production linked incentive scheme for advanced battery cell battery storage, under which Rs 18,100 crore will be given. On the other hand, PLI schemes worth Rs 26,058 crore have been brought for auto, auto equipment and drone industry.
An official told that, “We told Tesla that the policies which are already for everyone, they can also apply under PLI. They are welcome. Usually, the policies are the same for everyone.”

He further added that, “For a company, the government is not going to make any different policies. As of now, there is no plan to give any special treatment.” Panasonic, the largest supplier of Tesla’s batteries, has met with the government.
He told the government that he wanted to make batteries. Officials told that they should apply under PLI ACC Battery. Tesla’s representative visited the country last month and met officials from different ministries.

In 2021, Tesla had sought exemption from the government on the import of electric vehicles in India. Presently, bringing a completely built unit into India attracts custom duty ranging from 60 to 100% depending on the engine, size and price, insurance etc.
Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York. After this Musk said that he is going to visit India in 2024. He had said that I am sure Tesla will come to India soon.
India, the world’s third largest energy consumer, is currently pitching itself as an alternative location for US companies amid the growing distance between China and the US.
