The Goa government has announced that new rental cars and bikes are going to be electric from January 2024. The government said that by June 2024, electric powertrains will have to be installed in the existing fleet vehicles and petrol vehicles will have to be converted into electric vehicles.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant asserted that the government will take stringent steps to make the state transport environment-friendly. Goa is mainly dependent on tourism, due to which there is a lot of traffic on the road.

A study found that traffic from tourism accounts for 40% of the state’s total emissions. In such a situation, to prevent this, the government has ordered that all new vehicles, cabs and bike rentals should be electric vehicles from January 2024.

At the same time, the new government light motor vehicles to be purchased from January 2024 should be electric vehicles. And for permit holders who have multiple tourist taxis, bike rental or cab operators, 30% of their fleet should be EVs by June 2024.

While this move may sound great from an environmental point of view, currently Goa does not have enough infrastructure for electric vehicles. The electric vehicle charging grid in the state is not as many as in any metro or big city.

Along with this, there are many power cuts in the state due to which it is difficult to get uninterrupted power supply. However, according to the Chief Minister of Goa, the state is welcoming electric vehicles and people are taking advantage of the discounts available in EVs.

After introducing EV exemption in 2021, EV ownership in the state has increased from 0.2% to 9.4%. He says that the goal of this policy is to ensure that by 2025, 30% of the total vehicles registered annually should be electric vehicles.

Recently, even though the central government has reduced the exemption under FAME-2 and has done this reduction across the country, but to compensate for this in Goa, the Goa government is going to bring subsidy from its side. It can be brought soon.

There has been a huge increase in the sale of electric two-wheelers in the country, especially electric scooters. But so far no huge trend has been seen regarding electric cars and taxis. Although companies are bringing many new electric cars.
